Why This Breaks the Traditional NATO Model
For decades, the unspoken contract of the alliance was simple. The United States provided an unmatched security umbrella, and Europe accepted American leadership in exchange. Political disagreements over wars in Iraq or trade policies didn't void the mutual defense clause under Article 5.
